Laptop will only boot up when nvidia driver is disabled (or in safe mode)?

My hp dv9000 will no longer boot up in normal mode unless I have my nvidia GeForce 8600M GS disabled. When it's enabled, I used to get a BlueScreen (error with nvlddmkm.sys, a nvidia file) but now it just goes black after the windows logo and has to be force restarted. I've tried updating my driver and doing a complete reinstall, but neither helped. Right now I'm just using the default VGA display adapter, so there a lot of programs I can't run. Any suggestions?
