Need a Computer Geek to Help Me find the Right Laptop?

I want to get my son a laptop for Xmas and need to know how much Ram and so forth will he need to drive Solid Works and a Cad draw program. I do not want to spend thousands so any tips on brand, where to buy, etc. would be helpful......Thank you.
