The Great Gatsby "materialism" ?

In the book the Great Gatsby, we can see that Gatsby becomes obsessed with the idea of bettering himself with the use of money, especially when he meets Daisy, BUT, why is it that even when he has all his money (even more than daisy has) he still will do anything to have her?
